Singapore on a Budget: 12 Free & Cheap Things to Do

Budget Travel · 2 March 2026 · 6 minute read · by the MakeTours4You travel desk

The good news: Singapore's most photographed experiences cost nothing. The skyline, the Gardens' outdoor areas, the waterfront light show, the temples and the Southern Ridges walk are all free — it is the paid attractions that add up, and there are only four you truly must buy.

Twelve free or nearly free things to do

  • Gardens by the Bay — outdoor gardens (free). The Supertree Grove is free to walk; the OCBC Skyway and the two conservatories are paid. The Garden Rhapsody light-and-sound show at 7:45 and 8:45 PM is free.
  • Spectra light and water show at Marina Bay Sands (free). 8 PM and 9 PM Sunday–Thursday, plus 10 PM Friday–Saturday. Arrive 20 minutes early for a spot on the event plaza.
  • Merlion Park and the Marina Bay loop walk (free). About 3.5 km around the bay, best at dusk.
  • Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, Chinatown (free). Also the rooftop garden and the museum floor.
  • Sri Mariamman and Sri Veeramakaliamman temples, Little India (free). Remove shoes; photography restrictions apply inside.
  • Southern Ridges walk and Henderson Waves bridge (free). 10 km of elevated forest trail, easily the best free view of the city.
  • MacRitchie TreeTop Walk (free). 250 m suspension bridge over the forest canopy. Closed Mondays; go early to avoid heat.
  • Botanic Gardens (free). UNESCO-listed, 5 AM to midnight. The National Orchid Garden inside is the only paid part (SGD 15).
  • Changi Airport Jewel and the Rain Vortex (free). The waterfall is free to view; the Canopy Park above is paid. Perfect for a long layover.
  • Hawker centres (cheap, not free). Lau Pa Sat, Maxwell, Old Airport Road, Tiong Bahru. A full meal is SGD 4–7; a fresh juice SGD 2.
  • Kampong Glam, Haji Lane and Arab Street (free). Murals, boutiques and the Sultan Mosque exterior — the best photo street in the city.
  • East Coast Park and the beach (free). Rent a bike for a few dollars and ride 15 km of seafront path.

The four paid attractions worth the money

Transport: how not to overspend

  • Tourist Pass (1/2/3 days, unlimited MRT and buses) or simply tap a contactless card — fares are distance-based and very cheap (SGD 1–2.50 per ride).
  • Skip taxis except late at night. The MRT is faster in the CBD during peak hours.
  • Airport transfer: the MRT from Changi takes 45 minutes for about SGD 2. A taxi is SGD 25–40. If you have luggage and children, book a private transfer — we include it in packages.
  • Sentosa: the Sentosa Express from VivoCity is SGD 4; walking in via the Boardwalk is SGD 1.

Eating well for SGD 15 a day

  • Breakfast: kaya toast set with kopi at Ya Kun or Toast Box — SGD 5.
  • Lunch: chicken rice, laksa or char kway teow at any hawker centre — SGD 5–7.
  • Dinner: satay at Lau Pa Sat's outdoor Satay Street (from 7 PM) or a prata shop in Little India — SGD 7–10.
  • Alcohol is the budget killer: a beer in a bar is SGD 15–20; water and juice are SGD 1–3.
