The honest version: the Maldives is not cheap, but the ₹3-lakh honeymoon you see on Instagram is a choice, not a requirement. With the right island, the right transfer and the right month, a couple can do four nights in a water villa for under ₹1.5 lakh including flights from India.
1 — Choose a local island or a guesthouse island instead of a resort
Guesthouses on inhabited islands such as Maafushi, Dhigurah, Fulidhoo and Thoddoo cost ₹4,000–₹9,000 per night with breakfast, and the beaches are the same white sand. You lose alcohol, private decks and the resort atmosphere — you gain the ability to travel for a week on a resort's two-night budget. Many islands now have "bikini beaches" where swimwear is permitted.
2 — The maths of all-inclusive
| What you pay for | Bed & breakfast | Half board | All inclusive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Room (per night, 4★ water villa) | ₹26,000 | ₹31,000 | ₹38,000 |
| Lunch | ₹4,500 × 4 days = ₹18,000 | — | Included |
| Dinner | ₹5,500 × 4 = ₹22,000 | Included | Included |
| Drinks (soft + a glass of wine) | ₹3,000 × 4 = ₹12,000 | ₹3,000 × 4 = ₹12,000 | Included |
| 4-night total for two | ₹2,08,000 + ₹52,000 = ₹2,60,000 | ₹2,48,000 + ₹24,000 = ₹2,72,000 | ₹3,04,000 |
Numbers are indicative for one water villa. All-inclusive is usually worth it only if you drink alcohol and eat all three meals on property — otherwise half board plus one off-property lunch wins.
3 — Speedboat beats seaplane on cost
- Speedboat resorts (within 60–90 minutes of Male): transfers typically ₹6,000–₹12,000 per person return. Resorts: Sun Siyam Olhuveli, Kaani Grand, Bandos, Reethi Faru, Filitheyo.
- Seaplane resorts: ₹28,000–₹45,000 per person return, and no night transfers — if you land after 3 PM you pay for a Male hotel night. Worth it for the views and remote atolls, not for budget.
- Domestic flight + speedboat: often the cheapest way to a southern atoll, around ₹14,000–₹18,000 per person return.
4 — The months that save you 30–40%
| Month | Weather | Price level |
|---|---|---|
| November – April | Dry, sunny, best visibility | Peak (Dec 20 – Jan 5 is highest) |
| May | Transition, occasional showers | 30–40% lower — best value month |
| June – August | Wet season, warm sea, manta season in Hanifaru Bay | Low, good for diving |
| September – October | Wettest, cheapest | Lowest of the year |
5 — Eight resorts that keep the bill sensible
- Kaani Grand Seaview, Maafushi — guesthouse with sea-view rooms, ₹6,500–₹11,000 per night. Excursions to sandbanks and reefs from the island.
- Sun Siyam Olhuveli — speedboat, water villas from ₹24,000 per night in shoulder season, strong honeymoon perks.
- Bandos Maldives — 15 minutes from the airport, garden and beach rooms from ₹14,000, excellent house reef.
- Reethi Faru Resort — Raa Atoll, domestic-flight access, beach villas from ₹18,000, superb reefs.
- Filitheyo Island Resort — diving-focused, beach bungalows from ₹19,000, no seaplane noise.
- Dhigurah Retreat — whale-shark island guesthouse, ₹8,000–₹13,000, best from January to April.
- Fulidhoo Retreat — quiet local island, ₹6,000–₹10,000, brilliant for couples who want privacy on a budget.
- Royal Island Resort — Baa Atoll, domestic flight, beach villas from ₹21,000, near Hanifaru Bay manta season.
6 — Five things that quietly inflate the bill
- Green tax and service charge — add 12–16% to the room rate. Always ask for the total.
- Seaplane night stops — a forced Male hotel night costs ₹9,000–₹15,000.
- Bottled water and minibar — ₹700 for a bottle of water is normal on remote islands.
- Excursion packages — book two or three in advance, not all of them.
- Peak-date surcharges — Christmas and New Year minimum-stay rules can double the cost.
